Course Aims
This course is designed to provide participants from non-English speaking backgrounds with:

  • Employment and living skills
  • A knowledge of Australian society
  • Learning skills
  • Computing skills
  • Strategies for a successful transition into work or further study in Australia

These skills will help students in formal and informal situations in their social and community life, as well as in the workplace.

Entry to each EAL qualification is determined according to the following criteria:
  • A participant’s current English language skills (Ozford English Proficiency Test).
  • A participant’s prior formal education experience, both overseas and in Australia
  • Any prior EAL learning.
We recommend international students entering this qualification to have English Language proficiency level of one of the below:
  • IELTS band score of 4.5 (Academic or General Version) or equivalent internationally recognised exam result in line with DIBP regulations OR
  • Satisfactory completion of an ELICOS or ESL program at pre-intermediate level OR
  • Satisfactory completion of the Ozford English Proficiency Test with a score of at least 60% OR
  • CCompleted secondary studies equivalent to an Australian Year 12 qualification from an English language speaking country.

  • 1 Speaking and Listening unit
  • 1 Reading and Writing unit
  • 2 Language Skills electives
  • 3 General electives
A Statement of Attainment will be issued for any unit of competency completed if the full qualification is not completed.

Ozford utilises the learning-oriented assessment model. This means that assessment continues throughout the program until participants achieve competency or further training needs are identified and addressed. Participants will be advised of assessment requirements at the beginning of each unit and assessments are conducted weekly throughout the course.

  • Reading and responding to straightforward and transactional information
  • Writing straightforward descriptive and narrative texts
  • Participating in casual conversations
  • Role play
  • Giving and responding to verbal and written instructions
  • Grammar analysis and test
  • Portfolio and reflective learning
To receive a qualification, students are required to successfully complete all units of competence for the Certificate III EAL qualification.
Ozford has facilities and systems that include modern general purpose rooms, library and computer labs with Internet access and printers, multi-function photocopiers and wireless internet access.
