VCE and VCE VM

Ozford College offers two options in Year 12: the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major (VCE VM).

Introduction

Ozford College offers two options in Year 12: the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major (VCE VM).

VCE is Victoria’s highly valued university preparation course of study conducted in a minimum of eighteen months and a maximum of 2 years. The VCE Program at Ozford College has been designed to meet the satisfactory completion requirements of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).

VCE VM is Victoria’s TAFE preparation course of study conducted in the Year 12 year of study. The VCE VM Program at Ozford College has been designed to meet the satisfactory completion requirements of the Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major (VCE VM).

Year 12 (VCE Study Units 3 & 4)

Year 12 is the second year of the VCE certificate program. Subjects are organized into semester long units. A normal student workload in Year 12 is five Unit 3/4 sequences (each sequence is a full year subject) in a full year. English/English as an Additional Language (EAL) must be included in the 5 sequences. Students select 5 subjects from the list of subjects offered. Generally, for best results, each of the subjects selected for Year 12 should have been studied in Year 11.

Students who are of a very high standard and have the approval of the Ozford High School VCE Coordinator may be permitted to study one additional VCE study Unit 3/4 subject. Highly able students can also in Year 12 apply to participate in Enhancement and Extension Programs offered by some universities in Melbourne. These programs provide students with the opportunity to study a first-year equivalent university subject in addition to their normal VCE study workload. Some credit towards a university degree is given if the subject is completed to a satisfactory standard. Entry into these programs is granted by the universities that offer the programs. Additional costs may be incurred for entry into these course programs.

Assessment Methods

Subjects in VCE are assessed by a combination of:

  • Submitted Classwork
  • Practical Research
  • End of Semester Examination
  • Project and Assignment
  • Oral Assessment
  • GAT
  • Year 12 – Exams and SACS (School Assessed Coursework)

The minimum requirement to obtain the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is:

Satisfactory completion of 16 units which include:

  • Three units from the English group, with at least 2 Units at Unit 3 or 4 level
  • Three sequences of Units 3 and 4 studies other than English
  • Year 12 GAT (General Assessment Test)
  • End of year examination

Usually, these requirements mean that students must satisfactorily complete (Pass) at least six Units from the Year 11 Program (Units 1 & 2) and 5 Unit “3 / 4 Sequences” from the Year 12 Program. Some other combinations of Units from the Year 11 and Year 12 Programs may also lead to meeting the minimum requirements.

Successful completion of this program will provide students with an ATAR for university entry.
